I Went to a Movie
02:46
|
|||
Last time I went to a movie, I sat next to you.
You smelled like London Fog.
This time I sat next to some guy who smelled like Lysol.
You're only gone for two weeks, fifteen days,
but I'm here seeing movies alone.
If you were here, we'd have fun making fun of the movie,
to say nothing of the Lysol.
Walking alone to the subway—there's a show downtown—
I take notice of the stars.
If you were here, you'd say, "Stars? Yeah, some stars.
As a kid I could see the Milky Way.
"
I'd say, "Yeah, that's because you're from some podunk town in Indiana."
You'd say, "Podunk?"
I'd say, "Podunk."

Filing

Could I store my documents with yours?
Filing cabinets file folders full.
Please ignore my blatant un-chored chores.
I'll atone by toning down the fool.
Foolishness abounds in me,
bounding 'cross the floor.
Falling on the floor with my files to store.
Could you help me clean the mess I made?
Paper trails are trailing through the house.
Foolishness abounds in me.
What can I say?
I'll atone by filing my files away.

Jeopardy

So far we’re unfazed.
“I need a raise,” she says and sips her tea.
Sofa in the den—
the best place to spend our evenings watching Jeopardy.
I majored in math.
Went to a Catholic university.
She minored in math,
Majored in stats and anthropology.
An alumna of Columbia, and somehow married to me.
What is the Hapsburg dynasty?
Who is the Widow Barnaby?
What is Joseph Stalin’s 5-year-plan?
Who is the first ruler of Japan?
What is international affairs?
Who cares?
Sill, watch one more game.
“What is a dame? Who is Edith Wharton?”
She touches my face.
“You’re a disgrace. What is a mandolin?”
We settle back in.
Happily, my ignorance is forgiven.
Then, later in bed,
She touches my head and whispers in my ear:
“So, it’s up to you:
Is tonight a true daily double too, dear?”

The Corporate Elite

Former model, fighter jet,
opportunity presents
itself for wreaking havoc on the corporate elite.
Middling model, Maker’s Mark,
makes its presence known, it’s dark,
it’s
made for wreaking havoc on the suits in the park.
Pockets full of pansies,
pockets full to bursting with the fruits of the dead.
Pockets full of polish,
pockets full to bursting with whatever it said.
Former model, fighter jet,
opportunity presents
itself for wreaking havoc on the corporate elite.
Middling model, Maker’s Mark,
makes its presence known, it’s dark,
it’s
made for wreaking havoc on the suits in the park.

New to Me
02:38
|

She's...nice.
She's... good.
She's something new to me!
I never knew how nice and good something new could be.
She's... honest.
That's... nice.
If there's one thing I prize, it's honesty!
I honestly thought that I'd never be with someone as honest as she
is.
There's something about her that's different.
There's something about her that's really... well, something!
She's... good.
She's... nice.
She's something new to me!
I never knew how good and nice something new could be.
She's... strange.
That's... refreshing.
If there's one thing I like, it's that she' she!
There's something about her that's new to me.
She's good.
She's nice.
And something new to me.
I never knew how good and nice something new could be.
She's strange.
That's refreshing.
If there's one thing I like, it's that she's she.
There's something about her that's new to me.
There's something about her that's new to me.

Mawkish Friends

Imagine:
glasses on a coffee table, laughter at the door,
wine as gift, and pretty little laughs while she gives you the tour.
I am there, I'm there.
Imagine:
hip-hop playing at a bar where we meet up for drinks.
"No, it's on us, a toast to our friends," and, wow, nobody blinks!
I am there, I'm there.
Imagine:
Brunch at Pepper's, mindful chat, it's work and school and play.
Making plans to meet again, discomfort parting ways.
I am there, I'm there.

Commonalities
02:18
|
|||
Commonalities, or common enemies,
or common problems co-convening in our basement?
Shared ideals, or sharing meals,
or shaving excess hair?
I feel (I fear?) we're making something nice in any case.
Similarities, or Sims-like clarities?
It's like a human simulator simulation.
Take my hand and take my land
and take my pent-up love, my friend,
we're making something nice in any case.
The laundry room smells like my shoes.
I'm holding out hope, and I'm hoping that holds out.
The microwave smells like my stews.
I hope (vaguely hope) you won't notice.
Commonalities, or common enemies,
or common problems co-convening in our basement?
Shared ideals, or sharing meals,
or shaving excess hair?
I feel (I fear?) we're making something nice in any case.

Married Young
03:03
|
|||
I never thought I’d get married young—
but here I am.
I never thought I would have a wife—
even the word sounds strange.
I never put much stock in convention—
not even when I went along with it.
I never thought I’d have a conventional life—
and I don’t.
What I do have is someone whom I love.
Someone who puts stock in me.
Someone whom I love
conventionally unconditionally.
We never thought we’d get married young—
but look at us now.
You never thought you would be a wife—
partner, maybe, not wife.
We never put much stock in convention—
not even when it might have done us good.
We never thought we’d have a conventional life—
and we don’t.
What we do have is someone whom we love.
Someone who puts stock in we.
Someone whom we love
conventionally unconditionally.
